About Us
Hello, my name is Tazebew “Taz” Wagnew, founder and lead guide of Simien Trekking Tours.
I was born in 1992 in a small village called Ambaras, near Gich Camp, in the heart of the Simien Mountains National Park. I have spent my entire life surrounded by these dramatic landscapes, deep valleys, and high mountain plateaus—this is not just my workplace, but my home.
A Family Tradition Rooted in the Simien Mountains
After completing elementary school at the age of 12, I moved to Debark, now home to the Simien Mountains National Park headquarters. This move gave me the rare opportunity to attend secondary school—an opportunity many mountain children never receive.
I am forever grateful to my grandfather, Negash Wereta, who made this possible. He also played an important role in the establishment of the Simien Mountains National Park and its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. His dedication to the land and its people inspired me to follow a path of stewardship, guiding, and conservation.
Certified Local Mountain Guide
After graduating from high school, I successfully passed the official entrance exam organized by the Regional Tourism Bureau and began my professional training as a mountain guide. Since then, I have gained extensive experience guiding trekkers from around the world through the Simien Mountains.
My professional training includes:
-
Birds and endemic wildlife
-
Mammals and plant species of the Simien Mountains
-
Customer care and responsible tourism
-
Mountaineering and high-altitude trekking
-
Trek planning and logistics
-

-
